Reading Is Sexy. But Is It Sexy For You?
66Reading is Sexy
I am trying to get my brain around something.
Why is Reading so Sexy?
Looking over at a shelf in my study, I can see I am surrounded by books. Here's a few of what's been read in the last month or so:
Age of Turbulance by Alan Greenspan
One Piece Volume 4 Manga by Eiichiro Oda
A Short History of Everything by Bill Bryson
Einstein by Walter Isaacson
Blink by Malcom Gladwell
So let's see here- we have Economic Philosophy meets AutoBiography, A Japanese Comic Book, A Science Cosmology, A Biography and a Sociology book. Pretty Dry Stuff.
Some would even say b-o-r-i-n-g.
But it's not. Reading is Sexy. I mean REALLY Sexy.
I am not sure why. I am not a psychologist or anyone in that field. But I do have a theory.
Reading is intimate.
It shuts out all the world and television and gameshows and job stress and self obsessing and money and diet and family and automobiles and shopping and planning and measuring and reflecting and comparing and laundry and working and on and on and on.....
It's just YOU and the book.
And there is a connection. Deep. Piercing and Stripped Bare.
I promise you I cried and laughed at least once while I read all of those boring books I listed above. But it was still Sexy.
And I am a boring heterosexual guy in a committed relationship so I decided to read to my partner to see if it was Sexy. It was.
And what about simply watching her read by herself. Was that Sexy for me? You bet it was (and is).
It seemed almost as if the act of reading and not the material or the company was what made it Sexy. Not what I was expecting.
And I am afraid this is all I have for you. No answers or insight.
So here is the question:
Is Reading Sexy for You? Please tell me your thoughts!

Oh Yes! Reading is very sexy. I love to read! It's even sexier when my man reads to me! He does it so very well. Almost too well, it's so relaxing takes me to another place and then off to sleep I go. (Is that a good thing?!) Thanks for bringing up the subject. I think I will go catch up on some reading. I'm going to check this site out again. Nice to see you are doing some Deep reading. How was the Einstein novel. I've considered reading that one... Such an amazing mind. :)
No doubt, Lady Brett :)
Reading is most definitely sexy, and far beyond. It's love. Almost done with the Tolstoy, and then I'll be on to the next adventure. How about some serene Rick Bass for relaxation? Getting sleepy yet, Angelfish?
Fishbait ;)
I'd love to have you read some Rick Bass for me! - he can paint pictures in my mind with his words. Lovely indeed. Let me hear you read Fishbait. Bass it is! How old is that Tolstoy book? Written in the early 1900's?
It's funny, I think poetry is only sexy if its recited from the heart after being comitted to memory. But that's just me.
Reading can be deeply personal and the experience itself can run the whole gamut of emotions. I would agree with your charactorization that it is "intimate". I think it can certainly serve as accelerant for the imagination. I personally love to read too, and don't find nearly enough time to do it.
But, sexy? I will have to think about that.
Even older! I think it was originally published in 1875. Leo has an amazing way of his own. That passage I read to you about the coming of spring is wonderful ... with the breaking clouds, welcome warmth, and the awakening of new life. Good stuff.
I still want to read some Kurt Vonnegut as well. And Elmore Leonard :)
It's very sexy, for you and for others. Reading increases your vocabulary, your conversational skills, allows your brain to make scenarios in your head which, in turn, allows you to think more. It also is a great way of educating yourself.
I have always found that well read people are sexy, as they are capable of reading anything. I also think they are sexy because they have something to talk about, whether it is characters, themes, emotions, etc.
Reading is definitely sexy! The lovely ladies above have proven the point so eloquently that I cannot even add anything else.

I don't know about reading itself, but a well-read person is definitely sexy ...
